Why Moon Jellyfish Make Incredible Pets for Your Home Jellyfish Tank

Moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) are one of the best species for a home jellyfish tank. Their translucent bells and signature four horseshoe-shaped gonads create a hypnotic, almost otherworldly display as they gently pulse through the water.

  • Stress-Relieving & Wellness Benefits: Watching moon jellyfish glide in your home jellyfish aquarium is proven to calm the mind, slow breathing, lower blood pressure, and promote mindfulness — like a living piece of ocean art that brings daily tranquility.
  • Beginner-Friendly & Hardy: Moon jellies are relatively hardy and easier to care for than many other jellyfish species. In a well-maintained home jellyfish tank, they can live 2–4 years or longer.
  • Safe & Gentle: Their stings are very mild and harmless to humans, making them ideal for families with children.
  • Educational Wonder: A home jellyfish aquarium is perfect for sparking curiosity in marine biology for kids, classrooms, or office environments.

Why the Orbit 18 Stands Out as a Premium Home Jellyfish Aquarium

This 18 liter jellyfish tank is specifically engineered for success in home environments. Its compact and versatile design fits beautifully on desks, shelves, consoles, or side tables — making it an elegant addition to any room in your house or office.

The Orbit 18 home jellyfish tank features breathtaking built-in RGB color-changing LEDs with full remote control. You can create vibrant underwater light shows or soft natural ocean glows that beautifully highlight your moon jellyfish. It is also chiller-ready with external connectors, allowing precise temperature control for optimal jellyfish health.

Advanced Inbuilt Filtration System for Your Home Jellyfish Tank

The Orbit 18 uses a specialized circular kreisel-style flow that keeps delicate jellyfish safely suspended while protecting them from strong intakes. Water circulates through a discreet outer filtration chamber with:

  1. Sponge mechanical filter to remove debris.
  2. Porous ceramic bio media to support beneficial bacteria.
  3. Adjustable pump that returns clean, oxygenated water.

This system delivers pristine water quality with minimal effort, making the Orbit 18 one of the easiest home jellyfish aquariums to maintain.

Preparing Your 18 Liter Jellyfish Tank: Complete Setup Guide

Setting up your 18 liter jellyfish tank (Orbit 18 jellyfish tank or 18L jellyfish aquarium) is an exciting step toward owning a beautiful home jellyfish aquarium.

Step 1: Choose Location & Gather Supplies Place your Orbit 18 on a stable, level surface away from direct sunlight and heat sources. You will need RO or distilled water, high-quality marine salt mix, a refractometer or hydrometer, test kits, and a thermometer.

Step 2: Mix and Cycle the Saltwater Fill the 18 liter jellyfish tank with purified water and add marine salt to reach 30-33 ppt (specific gravity 1.023-1.025). Run the pump, let the water reach 65-74°F, and aerate for 24 hours. Cycle the tank for 1-2 weeks (or longer) to establish beneficial bacteria before adding jellyfish.

Step 3: Final Checks & Acclimation Ensure stable parameters (zero ammonia and nitrite, proper pH and temperature). Acclimate your moon jellyfish slowly. Regular 10-20% weekly water changes, proper feeding, and parameter monitoring will keep your home jellyfish tank thriving for years.

Ready to elevate your home with a slice of the ocean? The Orbit 18 home jellyfish aquarium combines smart engineering, beautiful design, and simple care for a captivating living display that you and your family will enjoy every day.

Excellent 18L Jellyfish Tank – Finally the Real Deal
I was holding off on this tank due to the other prices I saw online. Other websites say they have the O18 or 18L Jellyfish Tank but the pictures are of different tanks — smaller ones that clearly aren’t the same model. Nothing added up until I came here to jellyfishtank.net. The photos, dimensions, and details were accurate and transparent, which gave me confidence to move forward.
I was able to meet the owner and pick up the 18 Liter jellyfish tank in person, which was a huge plus. The tank arrived (or rather, I carried it home) in perfect condition with careful packaging. Right out of the box, the quality is obvious — thick, crystal-clear acrylic, smooth edges, and a well-designed kreisel (circular flow) system that looks built to last.
Setup was straightforward. The Orbit 18 jellyfish tank (also called the 18L jellyfish aquarium) creates that perfect gentle circular current jellyfish need. No dead spots, and the flow is adjustable so my moon jellies stay happily suspended without being tossed around. Temperature stability is excellent, and the compact footprint fits nicely on my desk while still giving the jellyfish plenty of room to move.
After a proper saltwater cycle and acclimation, my jellyfish have been thriving for weeks now. The water clarity stays impressive with regular maintenance, and the whole system feels premium compared to cheaper alternatives I almost bought.
If you’re serious about keeping jellyfish and want a properly sized, well-made 18 Liter jellyfish tank without the guesswork or misleading listings elsewhere, this is the one. Great product, honest seller, and real customer support. Highly recommended!

Setting Up Orbit 18 Jellyfish Tank: Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Many of us have been mesmerized watching graceful jellyfish float at public aquariums. Until recently, keeping jellyfish at home was extremely difficult due to their unique care and feeding requirements.

The Orbit 18 Jellyfish Tank (18 Liter / 4.7 Gallon) changes that. This ingenious all-in-one kreisel aquarium makes it possible — and surprisingly easy — to successfully keep moon jellyfish at home.

Why the Orbit 18 Jellyfish Tank Design is Perfect for Jellyfish

At first glance, the Orbit 18 looks more like a modern art piece or lava lamp than a traditional aquarium. Its round shape is no accident. Jellyfish are not strong swimmers and need a very specific gentle water flow to thrive. Too much flow can pull them into the filter; too little and they sink to the bottom.

The circular kreisel design creates a smooth, continuous circular current that keeps your jellyfish gently suspended and pulsing naturally. It also eliminates sharp corners where jellyfish could get stuck. The delicate tissue of jellyfish stays protected with no strong suction points or rough surfaces.

Built-in Filtration System

The filtration is cleverly integrated into the outer ring and includes:

  • Biological filter media
  • A reliable water pump
  • A decorative black trim that hides the equipment and is held in place by strong magnets for easy access and cleaning.

Out of the box, the Orbit 18 Jellyfish Tank requires minimal assembly. Simply add the filter media, attach the pump, connect the power, and fill with water.

Recommended Add-ons for Best Results:

  • Add a packet of Chemi-Pure Blue Nano or similar media for superior chemical filtration and crystal-clear water.
  • Because the design has limited surface agitation, add a simple air pump with airline tubing (no airstone). The large bubbles provide excellent gas exchange and help stabilize pH — critical for jellyfish health.

The tank also includes convenient auxiliary ports on the bottom, making it easy to connect an external chiller, heater, or additional filter if needed.

Stunning Lighting

A color-changing RGB LED light is included with a convenient remote control. The lighting beautifully highlights the translucent bodies of moon jellyfish and lets you create everything from soft ocean glows to vibrant color shows.

Step-by-Step: Setting Up Your Orbit 18 Jellyfish Tank

  1. Assemble and Fill — Install filter media and pump, then fill with RO/DI or distilled water mixed to proper salinity (1.023–1.025 SG).
  2. Cycle the Tank — Let the system run for 1–2 weeks (or longer). You can speed this up by seeding biological media from an established aquarium or adding a bacteria starter like MicroBacter7. Always test for zero ammonia and nitrite before adding jellyfish.
  3. Acclimate Your Jellyfish — Float the sealed bag for 15 minutes to equalize temperature. Gradually mix tank water into the bag over 1–2 hours, then gently release the jellyfish.

Feeding Jellyfish in the Orbit 18

Use high-quality jellyfish food such as pre-soaked Jellyfish Fuel or Jelly Deli. Feed once or twice daily by dispersing the food into the water column so your jellyfish can naturally filter it as it drifts. Because they are transparent, you’ll easily see when they’ve eaten.

Ongoing Maintenance

Maintenance is straightforward:

  • Perform 10–20% water changes weekly or bi-weekly.
  • Clean the filter monthly.
  • Avoid overstocking (3–6 small moon jellyfish recommended) and overfeeding.

With modern aquarium design like the Orbit 18 Jellyfish Tank, keeping live jellyfish at home is now realistic and incredibly rewarding. This beautiful 5 gallon jellyfish tank makes an elegant, conversation-starting addition to any home or office.

Jellyfish Growth, Size & Life Expectancy in Home Aquariums

In a home jellyfish tank like the Orbit 18 Liter Live Pet Jellyfish Tank, moon jellyfish (and other species) grow based on natural competition. When keeping multiple jellyfish in a closed system, the strongest individuals typically emerge during the first two months. These stronger jellies grow larger and more vibrant, while others may grow more slowly or even begin to shrink slightly.

This is completely normal — it’s simply nature’s way of selecting the fittest. It does not mean you’re doing anything wrong with your care routine.

Why Size Matters When Purchasing Jellyfish

Buying jellyfish that vary significantly in size creates an uneven playing field. Larger jellyfish will naturally outcompete smaller ones for food, even if the smaller ones were originally healthy and strong.

Our Recommendation: Always start with jellyfish that are similar in size — ideally within 1 inch (2.5 cm) in bell diameter of each other. This gives every jellyfish a fair chance and helps maintain a balanced, beautiful display in your 5 gallon jellyfish tank or Orbit 18 Liter jellyfish tank.

How Long Do Moon Jellyfish Live?

When cared for properly in a well-maintained aquarium, moon jellyfish have a natural life expectancy of about one year from the time they are “born” (strobilation) until they reach the end of their life cycle.

Bell size is a good indicator of age:

  • A 2-inch diameter jellyfish is roughly 3 months old → you can expect about 9 more months of enjoyment.
  • A 3-inch diameter jellyfish is roughly 4 months old → you can expect about 8 more months.
  • And so on.

This is why a jellyfish you receive in January that is already 2–3 inches may only live until September or October — not a full year from the day you bring it home. One year is one year from birth, not from purchase.

What to Do If Some Jellyfish Start Shrinking

If you notice a few of your jellyfish beginning to shrink, resist the urge to overfeed in hopes of “catching them up.” Extra food will not help the smaller ones overcome the stronger competitors. Instead, it can quickly degrade water quality and stress the entire system.

The best approach is to let nature take its course. Continue feeding appropriate amounts (see our feeding guide), maintain excellent water quality with regular partial water changes, and enjoy the natural diversity in your tank. The smaller jellyfish will usually stabilize and remain perfectly healthy — they simply exist at a slightly smaller size, adding beautiful variety to your display over time.

This natural size variation is one of the fascinating aspects of keeping live jellyfish in a home aquarium like the Orbit 18. With consistent care — proper feeding, bi-weekly water changes, and stable parameters — you’ll enjoy a thriving, mesmerizing jellyfish tank for many months.
